Examination Committee

Composition

The Examination Committee is composed of appointed diplomates with the following qualifications:

  • Diplomate in good standing
  • Board certified for at least five years
  • Actively involved in direct patient care or clinical teaching of pediatric dentistry on a weekly basis
  • A PPDSI member in good standing

The Examination Committee shall coordinate the development, administration and evaluation of the Qualifying Written Examination, Case Presentation, and Case and Oral Review Examination, and the Renewal of Certification Examination.

Appointments in the Examination are 2-year terms and may be extended every 2 years. Reappointments will be based on their performance and the needs of the Examination Committee.

The Examination Committee of the Philippine Board of Pediatric Dentistry determines by examination the proficiency of Pediatric Dentists who apply for certification as Diplomates of the Philippine Board of Pediatric Dentistry.

An eligible applicant MUST have completed an advanced specialty education program in Pediatric Dentistry, a minimum of 24 months full time academic study leading to an advanced degree in Pediatric Dentistry and can become board certified through the voluntary examination process that involves four (4) phases:

Phase I: Validation of Credentials
Phase II: Qualifying Written Examination (QWE)
Phase III: Case Presentation (CP)
Phase IV: Clinical Oral Review Examination (CORE)

The PBPD assumes full responsibility for the conduct of its examination program including the determination of the methods to be used in identifying irregularities during the administration of the examinations. It can withhold examination results or fail candidates if it suspects irregularities. The PBPD requires candidates to receive a passing grade on all phases of the examination.

Outcome Based/Practice Based Competencies

Phase I: Validation of Credentials

1. Documentation that the applicant is one that possesses a valid license to practice dentistry and has completed a minimum of 24 months advanced postgraduate Pediatric Dentistry training in an accredited program.

Phase II: Qualifying Written Examination

2. Cognitive expertise is evaluated through a written examination. The written examination will measure the understanding of the scientific and biological principles that support the practice of pediatric dentistry.

Phase III: Case Presentation

3. The pediatric dentist should show competence in clinical skills. He should be competent to take a comprehensive, relevant medical, dental and social history and perform physical examination. He/she must be able to record and interpret findings and formulate an appropriate action plan to characterize the problem and reach a diagnosis.

4. The pediatric dentist must show competence to perform practical procedures. He should be able to undertake a range of procedures on a patient for diagnostic or therapeutic purposes. He must be able to sustain successful treatment results.

5. The pediatric dentist should show competence to investigate a patient. He must be competent to arrange appropriate investigation for a patient and interpret these. E.g. radiographs, photographs etc.

6. The pediatric dentist must show competence in managing a patient. He must be competent to identify appropriate treatment for the patient and to deliver this personally or to refer the patient to the appropriate colleague for treatment.

7. The pediatric dentist must show competence in dental health promotion and oral health disease prevention. He must recognize threats to the dental health and implement oral disease prevention.

8. The pediatric dentist must show competence in communication skills. He must show proficiency in a range of communication skills including written and oral. He must be able to demonstrate effective communication with patients, relatives of patients, and colleagues.

9. The pediatric dentist must be competent in retrieving and handling information. He must be competent in recording, retrieving, documenting and analyzing information.

Phase IV: Clinical Oral Review Examination

10. The pediatric dentist must show competence in interpersonal skills. He must show effective listening, questioning and non-verbal skills. He must show effective communication skills in presenting a treatment plan.

11. The pediatric dentist must show competence in decision-making skills and clinical reasoning and judgment. He must apply clinical judgment and evidence-based dentistry to the management of patients.

Phase V: Recertification of Competency Examination

12. The pediatric dentist must show competence in continued personal development as a professional, maintaining his skill in pediatric dentistry.

Examination Process

Phase I – Validation of Credentials
The applicant MUST have completed an advanced specialty education program in Pediatric Dentistry, a minimum of 24 months full time academic study leading to an advanced degree in Pediatric Dentistry.

Validation of Credentials will determine his eligibility to take the diplomate examinations. The applicant needs to submit the application form together with other forms, documents and fees of the Examination. Upon verification of credentials, the applicant will be notified if he is qualified to proceed to the next phase.

Phase II – Qualifying Written Examination (QWE)
The Qualifying Written Examination is intended to assess the Applicant’s understanding of the scientific and biological principles that support the practice of pediatric dentistry, as well as current literature relating to pediatric dentistry. The successful Applicant must demonstrate a well-rounded in-depth knowledge of pediatric dentistry. This examination is not intended to duplicate the clinical application of pediatric oral health care that will be tested during another component of the certification process, the Clinical Oral Review Examination (CORE).

Phase III – Case Presentation (CP)
The purpose of the Case Presentations is to assess the candidate's treatment planning ability and knowledge of various aspects of treatment. Comprehensive patient care must be documented.

Phase IV – Clinical Oral Review Examination (CORE)
The purpose of the Clinical Oral Review Examination is to enable the candidate to demonstrate a high standard of diagnosis, treatment planning, and quality of care in selected cases.

The candidate will be awarded the Certificate of Diplomate of the Philippine Board of Pediatric Dentistry upon successful completion of all four (4) phases of the certification process.

The PBPD will assume full responsibility for the conduct of its examination programs, including the determination of the methods to be used in identifying irregularities during the administration of the examinations.

The PBPD assumes full responsibility for its decisions to withhold examination results when there is a reason to believe the answers of one or several candidates were not selected independently.

The PBPD assumes full responsibility for failing candidates on the basis of similarities. The PBPD requires candidates to receive a passing grade on all sections of the examination.

Renewal of Certification Examination (ROCE)

Renewal of Certification Process (ROCP) is a four-part renewal of certification process every 10 years that assures the public of a Diplomates’ competency in the specialty of Pediatric Dentistry.

ROCE is a continuous, rolling process documenting achievement in four critical areas of Pediatric Dentistry. Completion of the four areas is required of all Diplomates

Part 1: Professional Standing (Your unrestricted license to practice dentistry and the credentials survey)

Part 2: A commitment to lifelong learning, continuing scholarship and improvement (Your dentistry knowledge is current because you engage in self-assessment and learning activities, e.g. Continuing Education)

Part 3: Cognitive expertise measured by examination (ROCE)

Part 4: Satisfactory performance in practice/continuous quality improvement (Your active involvement in measuring and improving the quality of patient care)
